Win A Copy Of The Essential Business Handbook

I am going to give away a copy of my book.  To enter your name for the drawing, go to the "Get Your Free Chapter" link on the right sidebar and register to receive your free chapter.  The cut off date to be included in the drawing is 11/14/09.  I will post a video of the name drawing on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, 11/19/09.

If you registered prior to this announcement, your name will also be included in the drawing.

As I state on the registration page, I will only use your contact information to let you know of upcoming
events and opportunities, and new books and services I am offering.
And even then, I promise I will not bombard your email box with
announcements.  I block people who do that to me, and I would never
want to be blocked by you.

Pass this opportunity on to other new and soon-to-be entrepreneurs.

Reliable Vendors Are Vital To Your Success

Lately, everyone seems to be talking about the importance of branding and social networking, myself included. But let’s not overlook the importance of having your production team in place.

Chain

If you sell a product or have a service business that requires an inventory of certain supplies, you want to build a relationship with your vendors. Every link of your supply chain needs to be strong. If you have a great vendor for your organic tea, but your packager has chronic problems, you’re always going to be stressed out. Don’t endure incompetence, even if you like the owner. You will end up hating what you do, and dreading getting orders. Yikes!

Once you have quality, reliable vendors, it is important to build a relationship with them. If possible, visit all your vendors in person on a regular basis, from your suppliers to your packagers. If that’s not possible, pick up the phone and have actual conversations. Connecting on this level will help both of you to be more flexible and understanding when the occasional glitch or rush job comes up. Also, if you have a relationship with your vendors, they will be more apt to let you know sooner, rather than later, if there are any changes coming in their future that will affect you.

Additionally, if you are a very small business, working out of your home, but have plans to grow, you should start looking for suppliers and/or commercial space now. The Boy Scouts are right – Be Prepared! If word gets to the right person that you make the World’s best brownies, orders could start pouring in. This would be great, unless you have to turn away customers because you can’t keep up. You don’t want to be known as the company that doesn’t come through.

Check out commercial kitchens (or whatever business space you require) before there’s a need. Learn how much it will cost, availability, etc… Also, find out if your current suppliers could handle a sudden increase in the size and frequency of your orders. There’s no excuse for being caught off guard.

You are the face of your business, but there are frequently many others standing behind you. Make sure they are as reliable as you are, because when opportunity knocks, you want to be ready to answer.

Marketing With Knowledge Genie

I came across this great site, MyKnowledgeGenie.com It is a site that allows you to “package” things you know in a way that guides the viewer through specific steps. You can use your Genie in whatever way best serves your needs. You can educate employees, market new products, reinforce employee training, catalog documents or provide customers with the information they need. You can also use Knowledge Genie to make some money from what you know.

The instructions for building your Genie are very clear. There is also a tutorial, which I highly recommend watching. As with so many service sites these days, there is a free plan, or you can upgrade to a paid plan. Start with the free plan. As you see how it works you may come up with your own ideas of how to put Knowledge Genie to work for you.

The free plan has no monthly fee and is capable of creating one Genie, but you can not incorporate the Google or PayPal options on the profile page (you can’t get paid for your one Knowledge Genie). But you can use it for any other purpose. It’s a good way to see if it’s something that has marketing or earning potential for you.

The Starter Plan is $24/month, you can create two Genies and you can add Google or PayPal account buttons to your profile page to collect payments. There are additional plans that allow for the creation of more Genies, but you get the idea.

Even if you don’t think this would be of use to you, check it out. I believe it could be a very effective marketing tool. If you do end up creating a Knowledge Genie, let me know so I can tell everyone about it. Knowledge Genie
