The 2nd Annual Unique Los Angeles Spring Show

The 2nd Annual Unique Los Angeles Spring Show is scheduled for April 24th & 25th, they are now accepting vendor applications, through March 10th.  Unique Los Angeles puts on two-day shopping events twice a year; a spring show and a holiday show.  If you’re an independent designer, it’s a great opportunity to display your products.

Unique Los Angeles events have quickly become one of the city’s premier shows for designers and artists.  Last December, their holiday event was attended by over 11,000 people. I strongly advise that you apply today.

If you aren’t in Southern California, you could find a way to create our own opportunity.  Do a Google search for similar events in your part of the state/country. If you still can’t find anything, you could always pull together your own event. It’s been a long, hard winter. When spring finally arrives, people are going to be ready to get out of the house. A local designer show may be just what they’re looking for.  Here are some ideas to help get you started.

Intuit’s “Love A Local Business” Grants Extended

Last month I wrote about Intuit’s Love A Local Business grant awards. I was so happy to see they have extended their grant contest through January and February. They have also substantially increased the dollar value of the grants.

heart arrow

As before, five businesses will be randomly selected each month to receive grants worth $5,000, and judges will select one of those five to win the Grand Prize, valued at $35,000. Each Grand Prize includes $25,000 worth of local radio advertising on the Westwood One Radio Network to help them get more customers, a $9,500 cash grant to invest in their small business, plus $500 in Intuit products and services to help them manage their business.

Here’s what you need to know:

-The deadline for submitting a nomination is 11:59pm PT 2/28/10.

-You may nominate yourself. Just describe why you love serving your customers and community

-The businesses are chosen randomly from all qualifying nominations. The more unique nominations received for a business, the better their chance of winning.

-Judges will review the nominating comments of the five selections. Based on your words, they will choose the company that best represents a business that is loved by its customers, vendors, and employees as the Grand Prize winner.

Each unique nomination counts as a separate entry so enlist the support of your friends, family and customers. There is also a chance to win if you nominate 3 or more businesses before midnight on January 31, 2010.  Through a random drawing you could win a $250 Visa Gift Card.

So show a little love to a deserving business, and who's more deserving than you? Love A Local Business

Whole Foods Is Loaning Millions To Local Producers

I was looking to see if Whole Foods carried Justin’s Peanut Butter and I happened across this page on their site. Who knew that Whole Foods was providing up to $10 million in low-interest loans to small, local producers? To be eligible, your company must be a local (within a few miles of a WF store) producer of a high quality product, and they prefer that you have an existing relationship with Whole Foods, although that doesn't seem to be a requirement. You may not be a startup company. (Well, you may be one, but they won’t loan you money through this program.)

wf

Loans range from $1,000 to $100,000 to be used for investing in and growing your business. The current interest rate for their loans is from 5% to 9%, and there is a $65 processing fee. This fee covers the cost of obtaining a credit report and processing the loan documents and is only charged if your application is approved for further review. That is the only fee charged. The Local Producer Loan Program does not charge closing fees or prepayment fees.

I know this doesn’t apply to many of you, but I wanted to get the word out for those who do qualify. With credit lines and business loans drying up (for the moment), this is an amazing opportunity. Please pass this information on to others. Whole Foods Loan Program

Intuit “Love A Local Business” Grants

Intuit is offering small businesses a chance to win “Love A Local Business” grants during the month of December.  This is an amazing opportunity for five small businesses.  Of the five selected businesses, four will receive $1,000 and the fifth will receive $5,000.

heart

Here’s how it works:

-The deadline for submitting a nomination is 11:59pm PT 12/31/09.

-You may nominate yourself. Just describe why you love serving your customers and community

-The businesses are chosen randomly from all qualifying nominations.  The more unique nominations received for a business, the better their chance of winning.

-A guest judge will review the nominating comments of the five selections.  Based on your words, they will choose the company that best represents a business that is loved by its customers, vendors, and employees as the Grand Prize winner.

I already love Intuit because of their flexible merchant banking options, and now I love them even more.  Please take a look at the FAQ page and the official contest rules, and then nominate a business that you love, even if it’s your own.  And make sure you spread the word of your nomination(s) via Facebook and Twitter, and let me know so I can help out.   Love A local Business

Get Your Product Into Event Gift Bags

Getting your product included in a gift bag or having a table at a gifting suite is a great way to get exposure. Besides getting your products into the hands of the recipients, there may be additional printed promotional material that includes your company info, or the event may be covered by the press.

Gift

Because the opportunity for publicity is so good, a lot of people are vying for a spot and it can be difficult to be selected. But now there is a great new service available that will deliver you a list of gift bag product requests. Peter Shankman, who started Help A Reporter Out (an email of reporter queries), has just added an additional service, emailing out gift bag product requests.

The new list is completely separate from the HARO list and will be emailed out a few times a week. It will include requests from groups producing events, auctions, charity events, and celebrity events. They will be looking for products to fill their gift bags. If you see a gift bag request that would be a good fit for your product, ask the following questions:

How many people are attending?

How much product do they need?

What kind of people will be getting the product?

Will there be media exposure?

Make sure it will be worth the time and cost for you to participate. Figure out the cost of the product and your time involved. Then determine if you’ll be getting your advertising/PR money’s worth.

Sometimes there is a fee to participate in gifting suites and gift bags, but this is a NO-FEE-ONLY list. No one from this list should ever ask for a fee to participate. If they do, forward the info to the HARO gift bag people and they’ll permanently remove them from the list.

If you sell a product, definitely sign up for this email. You have absolutely nothing to lose.

Shine A Light – An Opportunity To Win $$$ And Marketing Support

Here is yet another opportunity for your company. The finalists and winner of the Shine A Light contest will get visibility, money, and some marketing support for their company. You can participate by nominating a company, getting someone to nominate you, or voting for a nominated story.

Light

The Shine A Light contest is sponsored by American Express, in partnership with NBC Universal. Three finalists will be selected by judges and one winner will be selected from these three based on participants’ votes. Additionally, the submitters of the three finalists receive a prize. The prizes are as follows:

The 3 finalists will each receive a $10,000 grant.

The submitters of the 3 finalists will each receive a $3,000 American Express Gift Card.

The winner will receive a $50,000 grant and $50,000 worth of marketing support.

People are encouraged to “shine a light” on inspiring businesses. To nominate a business you need to submit a story about their unique entrepreneurial spirit. Have they adopted an innovative business approach during these tough times? Do they exemplify a customer-first attitude? Do they give back to the community? How do they inspire you and other entrepreneurs? Here are the nominee requirements:

Private, independently-owned and operated business

Organized for profit and operates primarily in the U.S.

Has 100 or fewer employees, with revenues under $10 million

Accepts American Express Cards (they are sponsoring, after all)

As you know, I believe in the power of small and micro businesses. Take this opportunity to celebrate one of these companies, even if it’s yours. Shine A Light Contest
