The Body Patisserie Redux

At the beginning of the summer I wrote about The Body Patisserie (previous post) The founder, Shermaine Davis, suffers from eczema, and even the scented “for sensitive skin” products irritated her skin. She started testing natural products for herself, and developed a line of pastry scented bath gels and lotions.

Over the summer, Shermaine has been very busy with some DIY marketing and PR and I wanted to share her success with you. It is inspiring and is a great example of persistence and ingenuity paying off.

One of the things she did was search online for events that were hosting gifting suites and offering gift bags (before Wednesday’s email list existed). She then determined who the directors of the gifting events were, and sent them requests to have her product included. This trolling expedition paid off and her product is being included in the celebrity gift bags at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January 2010. This is an enormous opportunity for exposure. This goes to show that if you want something, ask. Sometimes you’ll get a yes.

She then went to the Ft. Lauderdale Gift Show, as an attendee, saving the expense of getting a booth. She brought samples and press kits and did her marketing on foot. The response was amazing, and she received orders from several boutiques. Additionally, Shermaine writes a blog related to her products and sends out a monthly newsletter. Both of these are filled with health tips and skin care information.

Because of her tremendous DIY marketing efforts, Shermaine has created a buzz about her products. She was recently invited to be a speaker at the 2010 Georgia Spring Fling (A Celebration of Soap and Candle Making) regarding the importance of product packaging.

You do not need a lot of money to get your business started. You just need a desire, a belief in yourself, and a willingness to take chances. It pays off much more often than you might guess. Shermaine’s success is proof of that. The Body Patisserie

Shabby Cottage Shops – Another Great Option For Selling Your Products

I learned about Debra and her online shopping mall, Shabby Cottage Shops, on the Dreamers Into Doers social network. Debra has set up her site to be pleasant for shoppers (all important) and affordable and accessible for sellers (you guys). Below is a description, in Debra’s own words (edited for space considerations).

ShabbyCottageShopsBanner194x206Avisitthe

“My dream was to have an online shopping mall, to give stay at home moms, work at home moms, and all artists and craftsmen an affordable venue to sell their creations. A lot of the online auction sites, shopping malls and marketplaces charge store fees, commissions and selling fees. Shabby Cottage Shops gives new entrepreneurs a way to showcase their product without spending a fortune.

The site was created for individually owned webstores and e-boutiques, allowing them to gain exposure, and enhance their online presence. Though this is not a new concept, it is more affordable than other similar sites.

I wanted to design something clean, fresh and pleasing to the eye to attract customers and new members. Easy navigation was also important, so I eliminated frustrating and confusing layouts. I want shoppers to enjoy their visit to Shabby Cottage Shops.

Another consideration when creating Shabby Cottage Shops was helping the members/sellers to become more familiar helpful online features, such as meta tags and meta descriptions. For those that don’t know, meta tags provide information such as who created the page, how often it is updated, and which keywords represent the page's content. Many search engines use this information when building their indices. You can have the best designed website, but if you don’t have these important elements, the search engines won’t find you.

We are advertising in National Magazines, through networking and on the internet. The most important aspect of having a website is it allows you a focul point for your advertising. If you don’t allow for advertising in your budget or join an online shopping community, you might as well be a “stand alone” store on an island with no tourists. Becoming a member of any online shopping mall enables everyone to benefit from each other‘s presence, ensuring all will receive the optimum number of hits and sales.

At Shabby Cottage Shops, there are three different levels of membership, starting at $35.00 per month, and there is a six month commitment.  Each progressive level offers additional features and you can choose what works best for your product and your budget.”

I want to thank Debra for sharing her story and creating such a great online venue. Please check out the site, as a shopper and a potential vendor. If you start selling on Debra's site, please tell me about your success story so I can share it with everyone.  Shabby Cottage Shops

Get The Most Out Of Social Networking

As I talked about yesterday, social networks are a great way to get the word out about your business. But are you taking advantage of all the benefits these communities have to offer? I wasn’t, until recently.

I came across a great Etsy shop, www.businessminded.etsy.com. Here, you will find a number of different how-to manuals (super affordable!!) that give you tips on using Facebook and Twitter, to help market your Etsy shop. The great thing, though, is some of these tips will help you market your business, whether you have an Etsy shop, a regular webstore, or a brick and morter store.

Businessminded

I admitted yesterday that I’m not on Twitter, because I haven’t taken the time to figure it out, and I know I’m not the only one. I got the how-to for Twitter today and will be tweeting very soon, I’m sure.

I know we’re all bright enough to figure this stuff out for ourselves, but I don’t want to spend hours (days?) searching the internet, and then working via trial and error. Especially not when I can get all the tips and tricks emailed to me for a few dollars. Once you understand the basics and begin to get comfortable navigating these networks, you will start to see unique ways to promote your business.

**Thanks to the generous owner of BusinessMinded, the first person to contact me through Mini-Biz Buzz ("email me" on the left-hand column) will win a BusinessMinded guide of their choice**

The Body Patisserie – A Delicious Remedy For Sensitive Skin

As Plato said, necessity is the mother of invention, and that is exactly how The Body Patisserie came about. Founded by Shermaine Davis, the company sells pastry scented body lotions and bath gels. She initially created the products for herself. Because she has eczema, even the scented “for sensitive skin” products irritated her skin.

Shermaine started testing natural products for herself and discovered Avocado Oil and Green Tea Extract moisturized her skin without irritating it. Not wanting to be stuck using unscented products for the rest of her life, she took it a step further and started introducing fragrances into her formula.

Because she's trained in the pastry arts, she decided to blend her two loves, infusing her products with the scents of her favorite pastries. Tiramisu, Iced Lemon Danish, and Grasshopper Mousse are a few of the gel and lotion flavors. Eventually, she started sharing her products with others. Like so many companies, what started out as “homemade” gifts and samples for friends and family, turned into a business.

Sensitive skin is not a requirement to enjoy Shermaine's creations. I bought the Key Lime Tart gel and lotion and l-o-v-e the light, fresh scent! Check out her entire line. www.thebodypatisserie.com

Passion and enjoyment play such a huge role in the success of any business.  You must like what you're doing and believe in it.  So take a look at the talents you share with your family and friends. There just may be a business opportunity in there, somewhere.

‘Bones and Roses’ and the Women’s Small Business Expo

At the end of April I attended the Women’s Small Business Expo, in Los Angeles. There were some very good speakers and the fellow attendees were great. It was definitely one of the more enjoyable business conferences that I’ve been to. This is an annual event put on by Wealthy Bag Lady, a company that coaches and supports small businesses. Even though it’s called the Women’s Small Business Expo, men were there too, and are welcome. I highly suggest that you go next year, if you can.

Be prepared to network. Bring business cards and promotional flyers because the best part of this event is interacting with a variety of people. From seasoned entrepreneurs to people just thinking about starting a business, the range of guests was huge. The energy level was high and the format of the event offered many opportunities for conversations. Check out info from the 2009 Expo here: www.womenssmallbusinessexpo.com

Also, throughout the day, there were prize drawings. The two I was interested were the 4 hours of housecleaning (didn’t get that one) and a beautiful silk robe. When I put my name in the bowl, I just knew it was mine, and I was right. The robe is from Bones and Roses, and designed by co-founder, Emy Hovanesyan. It was a great bonus to an already productive day.

I waited to write about this event until I received my robe so I could include a photo of it.  Bones and Roses designs are inspired by old Hollywood glamour and the robe feels as beautiful as it looks.  It is gorgeous, expertly crafted and definitely one of the most luxurious things I own, now. Check out their entire line at www.bonesandrosesbrand.com

College Students Provide Marketing for Hot Squeeze

Sue Sullivan had the Georgia State University marketing class promoting her hot sauce, Hot Squeeze, for free. How did she get so lucky? She met the professor of the class through an acquaintance and basically interviewed for the opportunity. It was a class project, and Sue’s company was fortunate enough to be selected.

The students worked the social networking angle, traditional marketing, pr events, blogged, and YouTubed (I think that’s a verb, now). I spoke to her and she suggests if anyone is interested in setting something like this up for their business, they should contact the head of the marketing department at their local college or university and schedule a meeting. This may be a new idea for the school, but if presented properly, they just might be interested.

Sue said the reason this was such a success is she made herself completely available, meeting with the class, providing product samples, and telling them her story. She interacted with them the same as any client would with a marketing firm. It’s an inspired idea where everyone wins. You can read more about Sue’s product and her experience with GSU here: http://www.thehotsqueeze.com/

Turn Your Passion Into A Business

There are a million stories of people who turned their passion into a business. The ones that become millionaires are sometimes featured on Oprah. But there are also stories of people who have been profitable enough to make a nice living, and I believe they're just as successful.

Think about
how many people dread Mondays because they aren’t inspired by their jobs. What
if they could make a living doing something they love (or even like)?  It would have a positive impact in all areas
of their life. I will occasionally share the stories of business owners who have accomplished
this.

Savannah

Savannah Moon Natural Relaxation ~ Bath & Body Care is owned by Karen Seremak. "Over twelve years ago”, she explained, “I started to make natural handcrafted products for my personal use and to give as gifts to family and friends. In the spring of 2004 my husband suggested that I should do the Wadsworth Herb & Craft Fair and that was the official start of Savannah Moon as a company. It's come a long way is 5 years!"  Stories like this are inspiring because of their simplicity.  It shows what someone can do with an idea and some ambition.

Savannah Moon products are available on the internet. They also offer a service where they put your company’s logo on the front of their packaging in any choice of scent, or create custom labels for wedding and party favors. Check them out. http://www.savannahmoon.com

I love this company because it is a perfect example of someone turning their passion into a business. Now find out what you love and start down your own path.
